The first look at ” Avatar 2 ” is finally here, after more than a decade of broken promises and production delays. The long-awaited sequel to filmmaker James Cameron’s motion-capture hit “Avatar: The Way of Water,” starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, received a teaser trailer from Disney’s 20th Century Studios on Monday.

The teaser is a triumphant return to Pandora’s rich and colorful environment, which is defined by healthy ecosystems, stunning wildlife, floating islands, and flourishing Indigenous communities.

“The Way of Water,” according to the studio, takes place nearly ten years after Marine veteran Jake Sully (Worthington) fell in love with Navi princess Neytiri (Saldana), became an avatar, and moved permanently from Earth to Pandora. Jake and Neytiri must now defend their family and home from the perilous forces that threaten their way of existence.

Michelle Yeoh, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet round up the primary cast of the sequel.

At the end of the teaser, Jake adds, “I know one thing.” “This family is our fortress everywhere we go.”

When “Avatar” debuted in 2009, it established a global box office record of $2.79 billion, which remained unbroken until “Avengers: Endgame” surpassed it in 2019. The same year that “Avatar” was released in theatres, Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States, Facebook debuted “Farmville,” Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s Grammy acceptance speech, and the writer of this article turned 13.

All of this is to indicate that it’s been a minute and a half since the original “Avatar” wowed audiences with its world-building and cutting-edge CGI. And fans have been waiting for the next installment for a long time.

“I saw the first one in cinemas 8 times,” one guy tweeted. “The most I’ve ever seen in a theatre.” I desperately desired to be a part of that world[.] I’ve been waiting a long time for this one, and it’s stunning.”

“It’s finally arrived after 13 friggin years…!!!” another piece of writing

However, not everyone was wowed by the trailer or enthusiastic about another round of “Avatar” fever.

One person commented that the upcoming film “just looks like a national geographic documentary of the blue tall people,” while another said it’s “wonderful how much the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genres include cultural aesthetics from indigenous cultures around the world but rarely if ever actually include indigenous folks in their projects.”

Whether you like it or not, Cameron has promised not one, but four “Avatar” sequels in the future years – even though the franchise’s timeframe has been continually pushed back. (“Avatar 2” was supposed to be released in 2014.)

Before “The Way of Water” hits theatres in December, 20th Century Studios will rerelease “Avatar” on September 23.
