The creator, the writer, and director of the incredibly successful Netflix series Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has issued a letter about the upcoming second season, along with a teaser trailer.

“Last year, it took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to reality,” writes Dong-hyuk. “However, Squid Game only needed 12 days to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”

After thanking the fans, he goes on to reveal some information about the upcoming season:

“And now Gi-hun has returned. The frontman is back. Season 2 is on its way. The man in the suit with ddakji may return. You will also meet your Young-boyfriend. hee’s

If you haven’t seen the series in a long, Gi-hun is the main character. Young-hee is a large robotic doll that acts as the centerpiece of the game Red Light, Green Light, and the highlight of the teaser video is her boyfriend’s eye: his name is supposedly Cheol-su.

The Salesman, the individual who originally drags Gi-hun into the realm of the Squid Game, has also been confirmed to return. This is the “guy in the suit with ddakji,” with ddakji being the envelope-tossing, face-slapping escalation game used to get Gi-hun to enter.

“Right now, we’re working on the script and creating the tale,” adds executive producer Kim Ji-Yeon (opens in new tab). “However, there is a lot of emphasis on how to improve [Season 2]. I know that many different fans and viewers have appreciated the series, but we’re really working on how to make it even more enjoyable for the worldwide audience.”

The nine-episode Korean drama is one of Netflix’s biggest-ever original blockbusters, and, as Tyler noted at the time, is largely influenced by Battle Royale (the movie, not the gaming genre), among other things. Indeed, integrating some of these dystopian themes with children’s street activities adds to the dread.

The success of the series sparked a surge of videogames loosely based on its concepts, mostly in creative platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, which witnessed a flood of “squidlike” and oh-so-many Squid Games mods. Netflix has also stated that it is considering developing an official Squid Game: The Game but has subsequently gone silent.

The end of the previous series made it apparent that this tale would continue, and it deserved to be successful (not least for the stunning and imaginative set design). Season 2 does not yet have a release date, but I’m confident it will not take 12 years to come.
