Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League final to win the championship for the 14th time. Vinicius Jr scored the only goal.

Outside the stadium, security concerns and organizational chaos caused the kickoff to be delayed by more than a half-hour. With Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois expertly deflecting Sadio Mane’s 21st-minute effort against the post, Jurgen Klopp’s side got off to a better start.

Karim Benzema had the ball in the net for Los Blancos just before halftime, but a lengthy VAR check determined he was offside.

Vinicius, on the other hand, held his position at the back post well to withstand a VAR review and touch in Federico Valverde’s cross. Liverpool failed to score in their third cup final of the season, owing in large part to a masterful display by Courtois.

The Belgium goalkeeper had already denied Mohamed Salah at close quarters from Trent Alexander-early Arnold’s cutback, and he went above and beyond again midway through the first half when he tipped Mane’s shot against the upright at full-stretch and had the good fortune of the ball rolling across his goalline and back into his grasp.

As halftime approached, the Liverpool defense breathed a sigh of relief as Benzema capitalized on a penalty box scramble. Fabinho was deemed not to have played the ball intentionally despite getting the final touch of the ball before the France attacker scored from an offside position.

After Salah had a number of attempts stopped, the tireless Valverde caught Alexander-Arnold sleeping at the back post and Vinicius finished an easy finish to send the Madrid fans behind the goal berserk.
Klopp introduced Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino, the former after Dani Carvajal suffocated Luis Diaz, but a Madrid defense that had looked ragged at times throughout the final stages held fast.

Liverpool still managed 24 attempts on goal, but Courtois was undeterred, and his spectacular 83rd-minute save when Salah sped past Ferland Mendy and fired a right-footed shot towards the top corner brought a familiar finish line for Europe’s most successful team into view.

With a Real Madrid victory, you can only expect a Madrid-style celebration, with people celebrating till the wee hours of the morning.
