Former Argentine legend Maradona’s famous shirt to be put up for auction in the UK, The historic shirt is expected to sell for over one billion next month, the shirt Maradona wore during the famous ‘Hand of God’ and ‘Goal of the Century’ against England in the 1986 World Cup.
The shirt will also be on display at the London Showroom from April 20 to May 4, Maradona wore a shirt and scored two historic goals during the 1986 quarter-final game in Mexico. After the game, Maradona exchanged shirts with England midfielder Steve Hodge, which he never sold. For the past 20 years, it has been lent to the National Football Museum of England in Manchester.
“The shirt has a deep cultural meaning for the people of Argentina and England, and I’m sure the new owner will be proud to be the owner of the world’s most famous football shirt,” said Steve Hodge.
Star footballer Maradona died at the age of 60 and was buried in Bella Vista Cemetery in Buenos Aires. He came from a poor family in the town of Villa Fiorito on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina.
In 1986, Argentina participated in the World Cup under Maradona and defeated West Germany in the final to become the world champions. Maradona was named the tournament’s best player, while under his leadership Argentina reached the 1990 World Cup final.
