EA is reportedly the latest studio to get a piece of the Marvel pie, with new reports claiming the company is currently working on a new single-player, open-world game based on the Black Panther series.
That’s according to loose-lipped journalist Jeff Grubb, who revealed the project will be a single-player-only title during Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings stream, with EA hoping to build on the success of developer Respawn’s well-received solo adventure Jedi: Fallen Order.
While details are naturally limited at this point – the game is said to be in “very early development” – Grubb stated that the basic premise is that players will need to complete various challenges in order to become the new Black Panther, following the death of an earlier incarnation at the start of the game.
Currently, EA is referring to the title as Project Rainier, most likely after Mount Rainier in Washington. This is significant because the development team is said to be EA’s new Seattle studio, led by former Monolith Productions boss Kevin Stephens.
Stephens, who oversaw titles such as Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War while at Monolith, joined EA in May. It was confirmed at the time that his studio was working on a new open-world action-adventure, which obviously lines up nicely with today’s new.
If Grubb’s sources are correct, the project is still in its early stages, so don’t expect an official confirmation of an open-world Black Panther game from EA anytime soon.
