At UFC 274, only one competitor will compete for the UFC lightweight championship. At Friday’s weigh-in, defending champion Charles Oliveira failed to meet the 155-pound weight restriction. Oliveira will be stripped of his championship and ineligible to win it back in the main event. As a result, only his opponent, Justin Gaethje, is in the running for the championship.
Oliveira started out weighing 156 pounds. In a later trial, he stripped nude but was still a half-pound above the tight 155-pound weight limit. “Do Bronx” was given one extra hour to lose the extra weight.
Non-title fights feature an extra one-pound weight allowance, which means a boxer may weigh as much as 156 pounds for a lightweight fight or 171 pounds for a welterweight fight. Fighters contending for a UFC championship are not granted this leniency.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole, the organization confirmed following the weigh-ins that if Oliveira wins the fight on Saturday, he would be named the No. 1 contender for the vacant title and will fight the next challenger for the belt at a later date and location.
The main event of UFC 274 is Oliveira vs. Gaethje. The co-main event is an eight-year rematch between reigning women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas and former champion Carla Esparza. The first three fighters to make weight were Namajunas, Gaethje, and Esparza. Oliveira did not attempt to make weight until the final five minutes of the two-hour weigh-in time.
